We use topographic maps for our programs. We utilize properties that have existing Orienteering maps, we design our own beginner maps, or we use USGS maps. (United States Geological Survey). The orienteering maps are purchased from the Indiana Crossroads Orienteering Club.

Areas with Permanent Orienteering Courses
Morgan Monroe State Forest,
1:24,000 scale. The USGS Hindustan quad map is available for macro navigation of this area. It is good practice for adventure races or preparing for hiking in national or state forests in other states. There is a permanent Orienteering course and a introductory compass-course here, though several of the markers are missing. TrueNorth offers Intermediate Navigation classes at Morgan Monroe State Forest.

Hoosier National Forest at Story, IN, a 1:24,000 scale map. The USGS Story quad map, is available of this area. The forest service also has a permanent Orienteering course here, though several markers are missing.

These are example maps we use:

Eagle Creek Park, East Side
of Reservoir, 1:10,000 scale. This City of Indianapolis city park (Indy Parks) located on the west side of Indianapolis, is a prime location for TrueNorth activities. Parking, outdoor shelters, indoor facilities, and a quality detailed orienteering map exist for both the east side and west side of the park. The terrain of the East side of the park caters to beginning and intermediate navigators, and can vary from flat, picnic area grasslands, to hilly wooded areas, with lots of trails and roadways surrounding the man-made reservoir.

Eagle Creek Park, West Side of Reservoir, 1:10,000 scale. The West side is a little more undeveloped, with a rather dense Indiana hardwood forest, interspersed with many hiking trails and sometimes steep ravines adjacent to the reservoir, which is perfect for more advanced navigators
.

Camp Belzer, 1:5,000 scale. A Boy Scout camp on the east side of Indianapolis in the suburb of Lawrence and adjacent to the new Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park, is another prime location. This beautiful plot of wooded property serves as a year-round boy scout facility for the Crossroads of American Council. There are several indoor facilities, many hiking trails, and hilly terrain that adds to the allure of this special piece of land.

Hoosier National Forest at Story, IN, 1:15,000 scale. An orienteering map created by the orienteering club in Louisville, KY is an excellent detail map for navigating in difficult terrain.

Youth-Friendly Maps

TrueNorth can make fun, homemade looking treasure hunt maps, or an activity can be developed where the kids actually make the maps themselves...!!
