3 Days of Experiential Class
Preparation
TrueNorth is actually in the classroom for 2 days, & provides resources for a 3rd day, to prepare for the Field Trip at the end of the week. We make 2 maps of your school, and students actually learn-by-doing the basics of Team Navigation!™. We provide lots of additional resources for teachers, including fun, age-appropriate activities engaging students in the basics of maps, compass, navigation, teamwork,
and the lifetime sport of orienteering. Inside-school and
outside-on-school-grounds treasure hunts give students
real practice of actual navigation on familiar grounds, and
is good preparation for the upcoming field trip.
Field Trip
At Eagle Creek Park, students embark on a real treasure hunt,
where teams use map and compass, and their new-found navigation/orienteering
skills, to locate checkpoints in the park, that are marked on
their map.
Teams work together to locate the clue data at each checkpoint.
The data they collect helps them to solve a puzzle, which allows
them to open a treasure chest! Students rotate different leadership
roles as they make decisions and problem solve, while walking
through the park as a team.
Fun, Safe Activity
Team Navigation!™ is a FUN way to experience
group learning. It requires NO minimum fitness level, nor a
background in navigation or orienteering. Walking is the only
physical activity (unless a sport coach wants the students to
be runnning!), and we provide all necessary advance preparation
and training. We will identify suggested clothing & footwear
considerations.
Integration of Indiana
Academic Standards
Sciences: Connects lab work to field application
and environmental stewardship, practical application of scales,
comparing old vs new technology, making decisions based on evidence
(scientific method)
Geography: Identification of local and internatinoal
map symbols, legends, scales
Mathematics: Using mental calculations and
estimations, practical application of measurment systems, devleoping
and adjusting strategies to solve problems
Physical Education: Introduces a new lifetime
sport (orienteering), integrates movement, social interaction,
and challenges
Social Studies: Exploring new communities,
group behavior, attitudes, and actions
Language Arts: Listening, paraphrasing, persuation,
reading comprehension, word recognition, darafting narrative
applications
TrueNorth School Approach: "Guide on the Side, Not the Sage on the Stage"
We teach naviagtion skills and tools experientially, using the international sport of Orienteering. Our pedagogy gets students up and moving quickly in small teams, and expecting them to make decisions and problem-solve on their own. We emphasize students learning by doing, not listening to a lecture.
Day 1: The Indoor Basics
We start with a brief visual review of map basics, and introducing both history and modern technology. Then student teams are issued maps, compasses, and cluesheets for their first day of Team Navigation!™training, to prepare them for the Field Trip. Students are also told they will be teaching their adult chaperones during the field trip, what they learn during the first 2 days. We talk skills and tools.
Day 2: Moving Outdoors
The student teams move outdoors, to continue their Team Navigation!™ training. A few new twists are introduced, to further prepare them for the Field Trip, and help them prepare to teach their chaperones.
Day 3: Field Trip: Students Are the Teachers
The entire group travels to Eagle Creek Park, and really get truly immersed in a Team Naviagtion!™ experience in the woods! Elementary and intermediate school age students teach the chaperones how Team Navigation!™ works, and we finish with several fun & recognition activities.
Team Navigation!™
Even though the sport of orienteering is primarily an individual
sort, we use teams to learn the multiple navigation skills of the sport. The skills translate easily into team roles. With the team only having one
map, one compass, one clue/answer sheet & punch card, this is a powerful
format for group decision-making and decisions. We identify
roles, and the team members must rotate roles, as well as decide who
does what. The size of the team may be dictated by the number
of adult chaperones on the field trip. The optimum size is 3, but larger groups work well with this.
Added Twists
The students learn more than navigation skills. With the required tool rotation, each student is required to participate, and they must all rely on each other. Word puzzles are also part of the challenge, so more cebreal students will have the opportunity to shine. Bogus checkpoints add to the challenge and the surprises! At the end of the Field Trip, prizes are awarded, based on several different criteria. But every student gets several free items throughout the week.
Experiential, Group-Based Learning
The above ideas are fun ways to have students physically
move around and learn, by using all 5 senses. They will
also be given forced team experiences of different sized teams,
where they will also have individual quiet time to prepare their
thoughts to their team. They will learn by touching real maps,
making their own maps, working together as a team to navigate
to team goals, learning to "read" a map, actually
using a map and compass to move to a real destination, experiencing
why orienting the map is so important, learning what map symbols
mean, understanding map scales, etc.
Summer Day Camp Program
We have limited summer spots available for Summer Day Camps. These are options available for Summer Day Camps:
Age-Range:
Minimum age of 5th Graders (in fall) no maximum age.
On-Site Program:
We can make a custom-map of your property, & engage campers in a mini-treasure hunt locating checkpoints, solving a puzzle and opening a treasure chest with prizes at your facility
Off-Site Field Trip To Eagle Creek Park:
This 1/2 day field trip engages summer campers in navigating through Eagle Creek Park with map & compass, locating checkpoints to solve a puzzle, and opening the giant Treasure Chest!
Combination of On-Site Program and Field Trip: The On-Site Program prepares summer campers for their big Field Trip to Eagle Creek Park.

Reasons
to Consider a Team Navigation!™ experience
Teaching youth basic navigational skills
is a great fit for elementary, middle, or high school curriculum
or athletic teams.. It fits well with science, math,
social studies, ROTC, or physical education. It involves students:
- working
together as a team
- group decision-making, problem-solving,
self-confidence
- learning about the different kinds of maps
- using estimations
- mental calculations
- estimating and measuring distances
- converting from metric to standard measurement
- learning map symbols
- pacing distances based from map scales
- taking compass bearings (with & without
a map)
- determining declination
- visualizing interpretation of map symbols
to real terrain features
- interpreting aerial perspectives
- solving spatial relationship problems
- walking in a park, etc.
