team goes only as fast as it's teammates can work together.
This is considerably faster than the slowest teammate."...........
Ian Adamson

"Successful
adventure athletes quickly figure out how to communicate,
avoid conflict, work as a team, and develop synergy.
Synergy happens when the power of the group exceeds
the sum of its parts." .

"Character
traits that most people value highly----honesty, integrity,
kindness, selflessness, generosity, and sensitivity--are all
central to a successful adventure racer's nature. Swallow your
pride and relinquish your ego, for the good of the team.".....

Coaching:
Beginners/Intermediate Adventure Racers
If you're just starting out, and need some insight
in any of the following areas, Jeff Coates is available to
coach individuals or teams. Coates also enters actual events
with rookie teams to offer a hands-on coaching & training
experience.
There is a lot in the multiple-discipline of
Adventure Racing: Summer & Winter Training, Gear Selection,
Appropriate Clothing for Warm & Cold Weather Races, Navigation
Techniques, Event Transitions, Proper Food, Adequate Hydration,
Team Paddling Techniques, Trekking, Mountain
Biking, Support Crews, Orienteering..the list goes on!!
Orienteering Lessons/Clinics
The orienteering section of adventure races frustrate
you? Coates can give small group or private lessons, beginning
with clearly explaining basics of map feature reading, pacing,
orienting the map, & basic compass use (putting "fred
in the shed"). Intermediate lessons involve bushwacking
(off-trail trekking), using handrails, attack points, aiming-off,
collecting features, benchmarking, competitive compass use,
team roles, & strategizing different route choices.
DID YOU KNOW? The word "rogaine" was coined
from the names of the organizers of a twenty-four hour hike
in 1976, RO(d) GAI(l) NE(il), and was retained for subsequent
events.
Setting
Practice Orienteering Course
If your team has some orienteering
experience, but would just like some practice, but don't have
the time to go into the woods to set-out controls, Coates
can set-out the controls for you, and make you a map, and
create clue sheets to give you actual race-ready practice....
Paddling Lessons
Remember paddling that canoe in scouts, or with grandpa
growing up? Adventure Racing with two other people in a canoe
can be quite a new experience. Coates can guide you through
the do's & dont's of team paddling.

Trekking/Trail Running
Not sure of what gear to use when trail running or
trekking? Not real sure of going off into the woods to run?
Coates has run trails for years, & loves to serve as trail
guide! Don't know what "bushwacking" is, Coates
can give you the do's & dont's of proper clothes, shoes,
food, hydration, workouts, etc.
Mountain
Biking
Urban mountain biking and single track riding are quite
different. Not sure of the difference, Coates can give you the
scoop on the down & dirty! Towing, drafting,
map management, pacing, preventative maintenance, basic tools,
tires, hard tail vs suspension, shoes/pedals, transporting your
bike, bike lights, fixing flats, off and in-season training:
are all things you need to know to race in the land of Adventure
Racing..!!
